Young Indian-origin footballer Urban Negi has signed for Everton’s academy at the age of just nine years old, according to the youngster’s Instagram account.
Negi, who has appeared in videos showing his ball dribbling and technical skills, has started to train at Finch Farm after impressing in trials.
The youngster played for South London youth side Dynamo Youth FC and classes Iliman Ndiaye as one of his football idols, according to reports.
The news is likely to be well-received in India, which has been massively under represented at Premier League level. Michael Chopra is probably the best-known Indian-origin player to appear in England’s top division, while Wales’ Neil Taylor was also eligible for the Indian national side through his mother.
At just nine years old, it is far too early to suggest Negi could become the next Indian-origin Premier League star, but it is good news for Everton as it shows they are recruiting for their academy from across the country.
The club has recently been advertising for casual academy national scouts. The job listing says: “As Pre-Academy Recruitment Lead you will play a key role in identifying and recruiting the best possible U8 players each season for the Club and will be instrumental in creating a world-class experience for both players and parents within our Pre-Academy, focusing on identifying & retaining high-potential players in the U5-U8 phase.”
The academy is undergoing a significant overhaul under new Technical Director Nick Cox, who will be addressing coaching and recruitment at all levels. You can read more about how Everton are transforming their academy here.
