Everton’s new Bramley Moore Stadium will be the first football stadium to use Amazon’s ‘Just Walk Out’ technology, allowing fans to buy food and drink by simply picking it up and walking out and scanning a card as they go.
AI and cameras track what fans pick up and adds up the total automatically, meaning fans can get half time and pre-match drinks in less than a minute without long queues waiting to be served or to pay.
The technology was first introduced in Amazon’s 20 Fresh stores and has since been used at the O2 Arena and the SSE Arena in Belfast. It can track when a fan picks something up and once they walk out with it, the technology can charge for the item without having to interact with a salesperson or self-service machine.
Amazon says: “Shopping at a Just Walk Out technology store is as simple as using your card or mobile wallet to enter, grabbing what you want, and leaving. That’s it. But while the experience is simple, the technology behind it is anything but.
“Our researchers seamlessly combined computer vision, object recognition, advanced sensors, deep machine learning models, and generative AI, to figure out almost instantly which customer took a beverage and who took a bag of crisps, charge them correctly, and allow them to simply walk away with their items.”
Earlier this year Everton signed a contract with hospitality and stadium food and drink company Aramark in what was described as one of ‘the biggest commercial deals’ in the club’s history. As part of the deal Aramark agreed to deliver food, drink and experiences on matchdays and non-matchday events at Everton’s new stadium.
A job listing for a digital marketing manager based at Bramley Moore and Everton’s headquarters in the Royal Liver Building says the role will be responsible for “Content management and consumer experience oversight for technology platforms, including Amazon Just Walk Out stores, self-order kiosks, mobile app experiences, and digital signage at the Everton Stadium.”
The role confirms the firm is planning to use the Amazon technology at Everton’s new stadium, alongside self-order kiosks.
