Everton have signed up ex-Manchester City and FFP finance expert Martyn Hawkins as the club’s new CFO.
The Friedkin Group have moved to replace the recently departed James Maryniak with Hawkins, who confirmed the move yesterday with a message on his LinkedIn. It said: “Great club, great fans, great staff, great owners, great history, great future. Couldn’t be more excited to play my role in the seasons ahead.”
Hawkins was previously a senior consultant for the Sports Business Group at accountancy firm Deloitte and reportedly helped UEFA form is FFP rules before joining Manchester City as finance director.
At Deloitte, he was seconded by Uefa for 18 months where he was integral to the formation of the current FFP rules.
He was at Manchester City for ten years and in the latter part of his time there became the group financial director for the entire City Football Group. He has since formed his own sports advisory firm but will now join Everton as their CFO immediately.
He is listed as an expert in multi-club ownership and football regulatory matters, which would seem like a good fit for the club as the Friedkin Group navigates its ownership of Everton, Roma and AS Cannes, and the PSR and FFP constraints on the club.
Hawkins will replace Maryniak at Everton after the latter spent eight years at the club, most recently in the role of Chief Financial Officer, a role he held since 2023. He left the club last month where he said: “I leave my time at Everton with an overwhelming sense of pride. It has been a privilege to be a part of a close-knit management team that has fought so hard for this club and the decision to move on from Everton has been one of the most difficult of my life.”
Hawkins will report in to Everton CEO Angus Kinnear as part of the new structure at the club.
