Everton’s stadium at heart of incredible new plans Liverpool city transformation

Stephen Hurrell, August 5, 2024August 5, 2024

Everton’s new stadium at Bramley Moore Dock is set to be at the heart of a stunning new development stretching from Liverpool city centre to the doors of Everton’s new home.

New plans submitted to Liverpool council last month have revealed a new Bramley Moore hotel, a ‘River Walk’ from Liverpool city centre and huge cultural and green spaces for fans to visit on their way to Bramley Moore as part of a multi-billion pound redevelopment of Liverpool’s northern docks with Everton’s new home at the heart of the development.

Peel Ports originally launched plans to build Liverpool Waters, a £5.5bn plan to transform Liverpool’s derelict dockland, 11 years ago. While there has been some smaller developments near to the centre of Liverpool the ambitious transformation has yet to take place.

However, Everton’s new stadium at Bramley Moore sits at the Northern end of Liverpool Waters and the progress made on the club’s third ground built in the city has kickstarted a new plan to completely transform Liverpool’s northern coast. Peel has now submitted a revised plan to Liverpool council to build homes, offices, restaurants and bars stretching from the city centre to Everton’s new stadium.

Peel says the context of the area has changed since Everton’s stadium is nearing completion. The application says: “Everton’s new 52,888 stadium is close to completion at the time of submission. The stadium will be used to host events outside of match days and the football season.”

The plans intend to create five new neighbourhoods stretching from Liverpool up the northern shore including two clusters of taller buildings to create a new skyline. They also include cultural buildings that could be theatres or music venues, as well as a new cruise liner terminal.

It means more green space and nature habitats too, plus homes near to the new stadium as well as a 2.5km ‘River Walk’ along the Mersey towards Bramley Moore. It says: “Re-masterplanning of Nelson Docks to create new relationship with residential-led neighbourhoodand respond to the Stadium and the introduction of new public realm.”

The application also says water access will open up travel options between Liverpool and the northern docks. It says: “Liverpool Waters will extend the cultural offer north from the Pier Head into Central Docks with a dedicated Cultural Building, and linking through Dockside to the Bramley Moore Stadium with a series of key spaces and development opportunities for cultural, event and leisure uses.”

Peel has also promised building heights and views in the new development will be ‘deferential’ to the new stadium and has proposed a new hotel in the Nelson Docks next to the stadium to cope with match day demand.

It says: “Within Nelson Dock, a consistent datum has been adopted, which is deferential to the height of the Stadium. This ensures the Stadium remains the dominant asset, both in mass and height from long range views from across the River Mersey and from Everton brow.

“The new Stadium will provide a consistent landmark throughout this route.”

Apartments in Nelson Dock have been redesign to support the stadium, while Bramley Moore will become the centre of one of Liverpool’s biggest sports hubs. The application reads: “Playing with the interface that the Stadium provides, Nelson Dock provides the opportunity for a floating sport complex, delivering a multi-use games area (MUGA), space for swimming, water sports and a sensitively designed boathouse.”

Finally, the application places the Everton stadium and the Victoria Clock Tower, known as the Docker’s Clock, as major landmarks for one of the biggest city regeneration projects in Europe. The application, once approved, will see Bramley Moore become the heart of a transformation of Liverpool’s iconic waterfront.

Chris Capes, Development Director for Liverpool Waters, said: “Our new vision for Liverpool Waters is both exciting and inspiring, driven by the people of Liverpool and the urgent need to create a sustainable place for future generations to live, work and visit.

“As this new image shows, we haven’t compromised on the scale and ambition of this project but we have reflected on what is most important for the future of this historic site, both as an international tourist destination and for the communities who want to live and work here every day.

“Central Docks alone will deliver thousands of new homes, alongside commercial, retail, leisure and community infrastructure and public spaces over the next ten years.
