Last week we wrote about the inaccurate reporting that claimed Everton would increase the capacity of Hill Dickinson Stadium to 60,000 for the Euro 2028 tournament.
More reports over the weekend claim Everton would be extending the stadium for the international tournament but official UEFA documents suggest Everton will actually reduce the number of seats for 2028.
The Hill Dickinson Stadium has an official capacity of just under 53,000 seats and boasts 22 executive boxes but this will be reduced slightly to just over 50,000 for the Euros because some seats will be unavailable thanks to UEFA branding, extra journalist provisions, and other tweaks to the stadium for the tournament.
The official UEFA website also lists slightly reduced capacities at the likes of St James’ Park, which usually holds 52,000 fans but will be reduced to 50,000 for the tournament.
Despite claims that Everton will seek to increase the capacity of the stadium before 2028 any actual expansion would be incredibly unlikely as it would need significant redevelopment of the North or East Stands including planning permission from Liverpool City Council.
The club could potentially increase capacity through safe standing, where the club can fit 1.5 people per seat in the lower South Stand. However, safe standing will not be expanded during the UEFA Euro 2028 tournament.
The official listing should put any rumours about a capacity expansion to bed in the run up to the tournament.
Everton’s stunning stadium at Bramley Moore Dock will host four group stage games in June 2028 and a round of 16 match. The stadium is the newest in the lineup that will also see the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, Hampden Park in Scotland, and the Aviva Stadium in Dublin share matches with stadiums in England.
