The Winslow Pub is set to close its doors for the final time after 140 years as Everton prepare to leave their Walton home.
The Winslow, often referred to as ‘The People’s Pub’ and a staple of the Goodison Park match day ritual, was opened six years before a ball was ever kicked on the site of Everton’s current home ground and has been a fan pub ever since. It underwent a refurbishment and relaunch in 2014 but will now close as Everton move to a new stadium at Bramley Moore Dock.
A planning application from architect James O’Rourke is asking for permission to convert the pub into a guest house featuring 26 bedrooms. The change of use would signal the end of the building’s use as a pub.

The pub was famously visited by Kevin Campbell after a poor performance. He apologised to fans and paid for drinks as an apology from the players in the early 2000s.
In recent years the pub has had harder times. It temporarily closed in 2023 due to hitting financial difficulties and was placed up for sale. It has since reopened and fans have one last season to visit the pub before it closes its doors for the final time.
Pubs on County Road and the surrounding Goodison Park area are set to face a challenging time in the wake of Everton’s departure from the area. A pub listing on County Road five years ago stated the pub operated at a profit thanks to match day revenue, which amounted to 80% of revenue. Without the football it could mean more closures for the area.
