Everton could announce another major Rugby League event after reports it was competing with Newcastle United to host the Super League Magic Weekend.
The Magic Weekend is a yearly tradition where several games take place in the same stadium across two days of action. It has previously been played at Wembley, Old Trafford and St James’ Park but now Everton could be seeking to become the home of Rugby League in the north of England.
According to All About Rugby, Everton have expressed interest to bring the event to Hill Dickinson Stadium after the success of The Ashes test last Saturday, which saw 52,000 fans watch Australia defeat England in the second game of the three-match tour.
The future of Magic Weekend has been cause for speculation and it has not been confirmed for 2026. The expansion of the Super League to 14 teams means there is no ‘loop system’, which means some teams would have to give up a home fixture to attend the weekend.
A possible solution could be to host Challenge Cup quarter finals across one weekend instead of league fixtures but no solution has been confirmed.
However, All About Rugby suggests a decision could be made in the next couple of weeks, with an announcement on the destination of a possible 2026 Magic Weekend announced as early as next month.
Everton would be a popular choice for more rugby fixtures after the success of the weekend. Feedback on the stadium was almost universally positive, with many fans suggesting it was a better venue than the first Ashes test at Wembley Stadium.
